Roxburghe House, Aberdeen

We were employed to create a new dayroom for patients and visitors, as part of a larger refurbishment project at Roxburghe House in Aberdeen. The project was a joint venture between NHS Grampian and Macmillan Cancer Support, who part funded the dayroom works.

Roxburghe House is a palliative care hospital that provides inpatient, home care, day care and hospital support for people with cancer and other progressive conditions in the Grampian area. Whilst the project had to meet the specific clinical and functional standards of an NHS hospital, to allow staff to deliver first class patient care, the clients aspired to have a space that was both welcoming, creative and had the potential for multi-function use. The environment patients are cared for in has a significant impact on their wellbeing. It was imperative to create a special place for patients and visitors to enjoy.

The dayroom is a single room with a floor area of 37sqm and a 10sqm link corridor adjoining the extension to the existing hospital building. A domestic scale was considered appropriate for the space which was designed to afford views out to the south and west, taking advantage of the garden and sun path, with clear storey north lights to allow the space to be used as an arts and crafts recreation space for patients.

The building is clad externally with rendered masonry and cedar cladding. The materials of the extension match those on the existing building, helping it to sit harmoniously adjacent to the existing main building. The dayroom is covered with a tiled mono-pitch roof, a flat Sarnafil roof covers the link and the rear section of the dayroom. The French doors provide direct level access from the dayroom onto the raised patio area, partly shaded by a cedar brise soleil.

The interior of the space was furnished directly by Macmillan in their corporate colours.
