Arch Henderson was appointed as architects and structural engineers to progress the design from inception through to tender.

Following the award of contract to Morrison Construction we were subsequently contracted to complete the design process and take the project forward to completion.

The remit was to design an Engineering Technology and Energy Centre for teaching engineering skills to students within an environment that was conducive to inspired learning. The building aesthetic was designed to reflect the intended use, with the administration and classroom block delivering a facility that is now a centre of excellence, with a clearly defined modern appearance utilising glass and aluminium curtain walling. The interior of the administration and teaching block has a feature central atrium which forms a hub and breakout space, around which the classroom and administration accommodation is set.

The workshop teaching spaces are based on the highest industry standards and include mechanical and electrical workshops, and a fabrication workshop equipped with 24 welding booths and a 5T overhead traveling crane.

The project included a new twin biomass boiler installation serving not only the new facility but the Thurso campus as a whole.

The brief stipulated that the design was to achieve BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’; one of the first buildings to achieve this in Caithness.
