Mair's Pier

Mair’s Pier is used predominantly by the local fishing industry, but it also provides berthing space for oil supply vessels and the occasional cruise ship. At 804 metres in length it provides a sheltered harbour for the new fish market we designed which opened in 2020.

The new 804 metre L-shaped jetty provides deeper berthing (potential 10 metres draught on the outside face) and a substantial working area of over 1.5 Hectares for the fishing fleet and oil logistics. The outer arm quay has created a dock sheltering the planned new whitefish market at the adjacent Mair’s Quay. It is also suitable for berthing offshore industry vessels and large cruise ships that visit Shetland during the summer.

The first 110-metre section was released early to the client to allow for the layby of fishing vessels, whilst construction work continued on laying the 15,500 square metres of concrete deck area, demolition of the former smaller jetty and installation of a vessel ramp, shore power points for the white fish fleet and four high power points suitable for large pelagic trawlers which lay-by seasonally.

The construction utilised a unique drill and blast toe stabilisation technique to eliminate the need for low-level tie-rods which would have required significant underwater diving activities and therefore this reduced the site accident risk.

The designed drill and blast toe stabilisation technique to eliminate low level tie rod anchors is also thought to have created one of the most efficient and lowest cost per metre quay developments in Scotland.

This project was shortlisted for the Association of Project Safety CDM Project of the Year Award 2017 and was highly commended.
